The Tulip Table.  A masterpiece born in an era of masterpieces.  A mid century introduction that, 50+ years later, is still quite common in modern kitchens, dining rooms and living rooms.

For today’s homeowner, a classic design featuring modern elements can be difficult to find.  But that changes when you consider the Tulip Table.  Here, we’ll briefly break down the history of the table and why it’s beloved by all.  We’ll show you how it seamlessly blends in with any  style.

Brief History

The original, the Saarinen Pedestal Table, surfaced in the 1950s – designed by Finnish-American architect Eero Saarinen.  It eventually became known as the Tulip Table and has been widely celebrated and copied through the years.

At the time of it’s introduction, it had a truly unique shape and form. Unlike traditional four-legged tables, the sleek Tulip Table brought an organic approach with a single aluminum leg in the center. The bottom of the leg beautifulled flared out to support the structure’s weight.

Clutter Problem Solved

In reducing the clutter of legs, Saarinen felt he had resolved the “ugly, confusing, unrestful world” underneath tables and chairs. The Tulip Table top was made of laminate or wood veneers or natural materials like marble. This modern piece was ahead of its time.

But why do we love it so much?  For starters, it’s sexy, classic and goes with everything. The Tulip Table can be integrated into virtually any style.  Pair it with an on trend clear acrylic dining chair, a bench, stool, lounge chair or modern sofa. While it’s understated and subtle, it’s instantly recognizable.

And while it’s definitive in it’s own style, it graciously allows other elements in the room to take center stage. An authentic Saarinen table will set you back a few thousand dollars, but lucky for us there are Tulip Table replicas out there that suit every budget.
