Ready to learn about one of the greatest icons of mid century modernism?  Today’s we’ll be discussing the Nelson Bench – the ultimate design icon! This masterpiece with dual identity was by prolific figure George Nelson, founder of American modernist design.

The versatile Nelson Bench serves equally well as seat and surface, depending on situation, and need may be ganged together to create an extra wide table or a long bench.

For influential design director of a renowned furniture company George Nelson, beauty was just as important as utility.

In fact, it was first designed in 1946 for Nelson’s own office, where he hoped the slatted wood top would discourage all visitors from staying way too long. Available with a striking finger-jointed wood base, the Nelson Bench is both functional and timeless.

Landmark of modernist design, the Nelson Bench has the rectilinear, clean lines reflecting his architectural background and his insistence on what Nelson considered “honest” design.

Honest design consisted of making an honest visual statement about a piece’s purpose.

Solid wood slats are spaced to perfectly let air and light through, sealed with a natural or walnut finish, and finger-jointed for unparalleled strength. All  of this makes the Nelson Bench ideal for homes, offices and public areas. Brilliant!

What Exactly Is the Saarinen Tulip Table?

The 20th Century is known for its amazing design deliverance – especially in the furniture industry! And, the iconic Tulip Table is a landmark design that redefined the way we perceive typical tables.

It was such a success that it even spawned a sub-genre! The story behind the conception of the Tulip Table, first pedestal table ever,  is rather interesting.

tulip table

Source: Roomhints

This innovative idea was by architect Eero Saarinen. His conception was based on a personal issue: he abhorred the “slum of legs” with typical rectangular shaped tables and chairs against each other.

He dreamt about a table with smooth curves and charisma that wouldn’t look cluttered at a glance. It was this need that became the mother of invention for the Tulip Table!

Let’s take a look at 4 compelling reasons that make it so unique:

1. Remarkable Design

tulip table

Source: Roomhints

The design of this inventine dining table consists of a platform base rising from the ground in the shape of an inverse tulip and seamlessly integrating into a smooth, round table top. Lovely!

It’s the ideal piece of furniture for your home if you’re looking for flexibility and great interaction – both physical as well as visual!

2. Timeless Appeal

It’s groundbreaking design, sleekness, understated beauty, organic curves and gorgeous form. This mid century modern masterpiece has long lasting appeal!

3. Becoming a Concept

tulip table

Source: Curated Interior

The Tulip Table has become more of a concept rather than a physical articulation of a design. The pedestal base, the curvy top, seamless and classy shape – they all sprouted a range of tables!

The same design concept can be applied to elliptical table form and is now available throughout the world. It’s truly something that’s become a phenomenon, more than a physical object.

4. Functionality Meets Elegance

Saarinen Tulip Table – the Story Behind the Legend

Source: Architectural Digest

Finnish born architect Eero Saarinen had clear objectives when it came to furniture design: “It must be classic, in the sense of responding to an often recurring need.” One such need emerged in the 1950s, while he was designing dining furniture, including the sleek Tulip Table, for Knoll.

“I wanted to clear up the slum of legs,” he stated, speaking of the unsatisfactory undercarriages he observed in chairs and tables back then.

Saarinen had addressed the issue before for the Kingswood School at  Michigan’s Cranbrook Schools when he devised a four-legged table clustered in a base. His father was president of Cranbrook Academy of Art.

Source: Architectural Digest

But, the streamlined, mass-producible Tulip Table he masterfully created in 1957 scrapped the legs altogether. Instead, the Tulip Table’s star was a tabletop of marble, wood or plastic set atop a cast-aluminum base.

Soon after its introduction, the Tulip Table was everywhere, from commercial interiors to modern homes across America. A personalized version with terrazzo base, marble top and functioning fountain was devised for Saarinen’s iconic Miller House in Indiana.

A fleet with polished bronze tops and black enameled aluminum bases was sent to the Four Seasons restaurant in 1959. Recently, they were sprinkled throughout Saarinen’s 1962 TWA Terminal, reborn as part of the TWA Hotel at New York’s John F. Kennedy International Airport.

Replicas emerged, too, but originals are still being produced. Anyone who has been stuck sitting at one of the legs of a circular table can appreciate the functionality of the pedestal base,” stated Shelley Selim, a curator at the Indianapolis Museum of Art and Miller House and Garden.

We hope this info truly inspires you. Now you know all about Eero Saarienen and how his iconic Tulip Table solved the common dining room dilemma!
