Eero Saarinen’s iconic Tulip Table is arguably more covetable now than it ever was, even if it was originally designed way back in 1956. Its appeal has exponentially increased!
In many ways it’s the perfect example of mid century modern design – it’s contemporary, transcendental and endlessly versatile, of course.
As the Tulip Table celebrates 64 years as an iconic design, we’ll be delving a bit deeper into the story of one of Saarinen’s finest pieces.
Brief History

While living in Michigan in the United States in the 1950s, Finnish architect Eero Saarinen designed the Tulip Table. It was part of a collection nicknamed the ‘Pedestal Collection’, also known as Tulip Collection, which also included his Tulip Chair.
The ‘Slum of Legs’
Saarinen couldn’t believe that no designer had ever tackled what he believed was an ‘ugly, confusing, unrestful world’ hidden underneath a dining table. He wanted to clear up the ‘slum of legs’!
