Furniture Design Marvel – The Iconic Womb Chair

There’s nothing like the feeling of being ensconced in a cushy chair, with your knees pulled up and softness all over. That’s exactly what Florence Knoll knew when she asked legendary designer Saarinen to design a chair for her. The enveloping Womb Chair is the product of his innovative design skill!

It has become an iconic mid century classic. Back when he devised the groundbreaking Womb Chair, Eero Saarinen wanted to create a comfortable chair that would not be like the typical rigid chair. He wanted people to be able to sit easily in a variety of positions!

Luckily, he came across a shipbuilder back then who was using fiberglass, which ended up being very useful for creating complicated curves and shapes. For the seat and back of the sculptural Womb Chair, he used loose cushions filled with latex foam.

The Womb Chair was designed in 1946, and finally produced in 1848. Saarinen was a Finnish-American architect, recognized for his solo work as well as his collaborations with other designers, such as Florence Knoll. Probably best known for his furniture designs like the Womb Chair,

This prize-winning architect’s works include the St. Louis Gateway Arch, the TWA terminal at JFK and the main terminal at Dulles International Airport, along with striking buildings around the world. Yet, he’s best known worldwide for his WOmb Chair, prime example of organic modernism.

The Womb Chair has a prime rol when it comes to the public accepting modern furniture pieces. Believe it or not, besides appearing in a Coca Cola ad, it also landed on the cover of the Saturday Evening Post in 1959. Here, famous Normal Rockwell showed it in his iconic cover paintings.
