Iconic Scandinavian Chairs that Are Always IN

Even if trends may come and go, mid century modern design is always in style thanks to its timeless pieces. In fact, an award winning interior designer believes mid century modern is here to stay according to Forbes

Today, we’ll be showcasing mid century modern classics that originated in Nordic countries. Here are four iconic Scandinavian chairs that are always IN:

1. Womb Chair

Finnish-born architect and designer Eero Saarinen created the groundbreaking Womb Chair in 1946. This sculptural beauty came thanks to Florence Knoll’s request, she asked him to craft “a chair that was like a basketful of pillows.”

Saarinen delivered with a style enveloping icon that lets you curl up in an oasis of calm – hence its name. Mid century mastermind Saarien is also behind the organic Tulip Table, the first pedestal table ever.

Trained as a cabinetmaker, Danish icon Hans Wegner had a masterful understanding of wood.  Wegner’s edgy, three legged Shell Chair with an avant-garde look debuted in 1963. It was reintroduced in 1998 to a public more receptive to its airy, wavy design.

Expertly built of molded walnut plywood and lux Aniline leather leather padded seat and back, finish this masterpiece. The Shell Chair is a feat of brilliant cabinetry with perfectly curved joints, giving it an aerodynamic energy that looks futuristic.

4. Pelican Chair

Danish architect Finn Juhl, the man behind the iconic Finn Juhl Sideboard, designed the Pelican Chair back in 1940. Its organic, curvy lines make it one of the most coveted furniture pieces of its time. Its sculptural beauty proves Finn Juhl’s philosophy that “a chair is not just a product of decorative art in a space; it is a form and a space in itself.”
