Saarinen’s Womb Chair Grand Appearances on the Big Screen

Finnish born mid century design mastermind Eero Saarinen created the groundbreaking Womb Chair in 1946. This was thanks to fiend Florence Knoll’s request of coming up with a comfy chair “like a great big basket of pillows, that I can curl up in.”

He definitely brought her words to life with the enveloping beauty! As stated by Saarinen “I designed the Womb Chair… to take the place of the old overstuffed chair. Today, more than ever before, we need to relax.”

Prone to innovation and experimentation, he explored creating a chair that would me comfy due to its shape rather than depth of cushioning.  And it’s exactly what he did!

Like other iconic furniture pieces, the Womb Chair, has quickly become a recognizable and loved addition, while making an array appearances in the big screen, starting with ‘Rear Window’ back in 1954.
